So far, the best Praise Music honoring Our Lord I've ever heard; save for him doing the "Ave Maria"

Possitively heavenly!!

Truly glorious!
As you probably know, the words of this prayer
originally came from Jesus. That in itself make this prayer heavenly. This presentation got me all chocked up.

I would think that this would be the kind of music that Jesus would prefer to hear when he returns, not Christian rap or hip hop or rock and roll. Just Godly music. I am not a Mormon and cannot follow the Mormon ways but I can't help but give them praise for the work of the choir. Andrea Bocelli is one of my favorite opera singers. He has overcome the affliction of blindness and soared as with the wings of eagles to the top.

Bravo! We should have more articles like this instead of the "Politically Correct" junk forced down our throats by the ACLU.

I was disappointed. The magnificent Choir played second-fiddle to an excellent soloist. I, however, would have been much happier with all chorus and no soloist.

I have always much loved the Mormon choir and it's truly inspirational music. I am disturbed however in not seeing one black face in either the orchastra or the choir. It is also hard not to be reminded, as I listen to this beautiful music, that they do not practice equality for women or women's rights. With all this lovely church music they still don't get it. "What you do to the least of my brethern you do to me." and "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Will they ever learn?

Mort C said...

1:50 There is a black woman in the choir. There is a black man as well. There are also just as many women in the choir as men. LDS Church membership is greater outside of the US than inside. This includes Africa, South America, etc. where the predominate race is not Caucasian. It has to do with location, not race: Salt Lake City, UT. In 2000, only 1.1% of pop. was black. There are 2 black people in a 100 member choir. That's better than the state's ratio! Beautiful Music!

We all need to do more than just listen to this beautiful voice. We need to listen to what he is saying and take it as a model prayer that we all should say and truly need to mean as we sing these words from our hearts to GOD ALMIGHTY.HE deserves our reverence and love in return .

Boccelli has a pleasant voice: a cut above Josh Groban but he can't touch Luciano Pavarotti.

Walter,
Prehaps through your bigotted eyes you could not see that several members of the choir ARE black. Don't be putting yourself on a pedestal with your holier than thou comments. The Mormons are the kindest most God fearing people on earth. Try taking care of the fly in your own eye instead of the gnat in others....

Walter,
Well, I am a Latter-day Saint woman, and we do have equality, and women's rights. Perhaps you aren't aware that we have Woman Presidents over the Relief Society, Young Women, and Primary. We have the largest and oldest Women's organization in the world. We have black men and women in leadership positions in the Church. As for the choir, they have very strict requirements, including being an active member of the Church with a temple recommend, a degree in music, tough auditions, including sight reading, and a strenuous schedule. And, there are black men and women in the choir, including a famous Christian artist, Alex Boye.

As for your last remark, about loving your neighbor as yourself: What have you done for Haiti? Our Church has sent medical supplies, doctors, food and water, tents and tarps, baby layettes, blankets, hygiene kits, etc. Our chapels in the area have been offering shelter to the refugees. Our Church is always among the first to respond to any major disaster, anywhere in the world. We are a Church of volunteers. We don't have a paid ministry.

That was absolutely beautiful! I love the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and I really enjoyed hearing Andrea Bocelli with them. He has a powerful voice! He and Josh Groban, another favorite of mine, sound similar. Both are great singers. This was a lovely thing to find in my e-mail, just as I got home from Stake Choir practice. What a perfect addition to my Sunday evening.

To be a member of the Choir you must live within 100 miles of SLC, have a wonderful voice, be willing to spend the amount of time necessary to have a repetoire of about 1500 pieces, be able to take time off work to travel with them, receive no pay for your participation,be under 60 (I think), and be a member of the LDS Church as you will also require a recommend from your bishop. But those aforementioned things tend to be more of a commitment than using color, gender, size or other things. There is also a 'training choir' for those who are getting ready to yet again - try out for the big sound - the MoTab Choir. I'd just love to be a member, but I'm missing the wonderful voice, am too far from SL, and am unwilling to admit I'm too old. Go Choir! Go Andrea!

What irony! Beautiful voices singing a most powerful prayer - but of all religious groups in this country and most others, the Mormons have the most limited understanding of the God who is Father of all. Women, racial minorities, faithful gay and lesbian people and critics do not find their god a loving or accepting presence.

Julie said...

It would have NEVER occurred to me to critize anyone or anything after listening to that. I was filled with the Lord's spirit. Hmmm? Can't we all look for the positive in others. That is the truly Christian way. Put all religious title aside. Simply look for the good. There is good in everyone. There is good in all religions. I don't think God cares exactly what religion you are, but that you are doing your heartfelt best to be Christ-like...inspired by whatever religious avenue speaks to you....I fail to see a Christ-like quality in fault-finding.

Contempt prior to examination."

Wow! How graceful! So many comments from so many critical followers of Christ. Did He not say that Eternal Life is the gift of God through Jesus Christ, by Grace, through Faith, and that Not of works so that we could not boast. It is a gift. Just as this music. But so as the prayer example (the how, not the what) we often stumble over the gift, the example, and quarrel and boast, and argue over who is doing what. What a heartache the Lord must have over the love for his loved ones. 2 Corinthians 11:3-4 NKJV states,, as Paul Writes fervently, "But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be currupted from the sijmplicity andpurity that is in Christ. For if he who cmoes prieaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you havce not accepted - you may well put up with it!" Jesus also said he who wants to be first, must be last. And who wants to find his life must lose it for my sake. Tell me, to what organization did Christ belong? To what regulations did Christ commit Himself and His Will? What then should we be about doing?
He summed up the entire law into practice under grace by saying the greatest of these is to 1., Love your God with ALL your heart, soul and strength, and to love your neighbor (all others) as your self. You'll find these emcompass all the commandments. -- If we filter our opinion of the Lord's model prayer just sung in professional excellence in Salt Lake by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, knowing only God sees the heart, then we can only but praise God that His Word and His name is being glorified my millions on such a medium as the internet. And my life was just enriched. Praise the Lord! May others be blessed as well. I know my wife would have been.

Each year, the choir invites a special guest of the caliber of Bocelli. The tickets to the concert (held on three nights in mid-December)are free, but the demand is so great, they are awarded by lottery. Sign up for your chance to get tickets in October. It will be one of the most memorable Christmas experiences you will ever have. And no, Mormons are not racists and yes, Mormons are CHRISTIANS!

Signor Bocelli is a tool of the Vatican, helping to promote the idea that there is a god out there among the stars, the planets, the constellations, the universe, and this god is looking down on little old us in a beneficent way. What a stretch of the imagination! All religions glorify man and elevate him to a level of importance among the other beings on this planet. Yet, he happens to be the smartest animal, and in many cases, not the wisest. At the rate at which man is destroying the earth that is his home, we will be lucky if we survive to see the years ahead.

Truly inspired, uplifting music that ought to bring out the best in all people, believers or not. However, only the believers will have soft and open hearts to hear more than with the ears, and understand the tongue of angels. And in that "tongue" is the true message behind the music, bearing witness of Father in Heaven and His Beloved Son Jesus, the Christ.

I would love to have heard this in person but am so thankful that a dear friend sent it to me in an e-mail.
I grew up with great music all my life and Andrea Bocelli and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir are among my very favorite musicians. What a special treat and blessing to hear them together! The gifts of their voices, and the spirit their music brings, draws me closer to God and to His Heaven.
We must keep uppermost in our minds that our desire to be forgiven of our debts, our trespasses, sins, mistakes, whatever you want to call our human frailties, is contingent on our willingness to forgive others from our hearts, unconditionally. Christ has paid for the sins and imperfections of everyone, whether or not they, or we, choose to repent and come to Christ. If we hold onto hard feelings, pride, self-righteousness, grudges, hurt feelings, judgementalness, etc., choosing not to forgive others in our hearts, we, in effect, choose not to forgive Christ who has already paid the price for the sins of ALL. God Said "I the Lord will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men [and women]." That requirement is for the sake of our own Peace and inner healing.
God's offer of forgiveness to each of us and our need to forgive ALL others in order that we can be forgiven and can access the Gift of Christ's Atonement, is the great message of "The Lord's Prayer."
My heartfelt thanks to the person who first posted this beautiful musical rendition of that Prayer.

I will never in my lifetime think of this prayer as differently as I do tonight.

I am listening to it for the third time and will probably listen to it a few more times before turning it off.

That voice. . . What can I say? The way he sings the Lord's Prayer, so effortlessly. Watch him and he hardly takes a breath to sing with. There is no strain showing on his face. He is not forcing the words out, they flow from his voice. . . so smoothely, so beautifully, so worshipfully, with a God given voice unlike any other.

May the Lord continue to bless Andrea with many, many, more years of singing His praises and doing so with no more effort than he did with this prayer, the prayer of our Father.

God Bless Andrea, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the Orchestra and everyone else involved in this presentation, and may God Bless everyone who watches and/or listens to this blessing through Andrea's voice.

I know I have been blessed and I hope everyone else has as well.

All praise be to God and all things to His Glory.

Stunning words from our Lord Jesus Christ. Of course. That is a given. Although, IMHO, NOT so stunning music. Yes, indeed, people love this music, but does that make it good music? The melody is sort of pretty, the harmony is not unskillfully written, but every time I hear this, I am always left with an unsatisfied soul. I would much prefer hearing a Bach chorale, a Handel aria, or a movement of a mass by Haydn, Mozart, or Brahms.

Hosea: God made us body, soul, and spirit. Our soul is mind, emotion, and will. Too much of our western 'mind' is focused on whether something seems rational, to the exclusion of remembering that emotion is also a divinely given human attribute. The heart is moved when we allow the Spirit of God into our hearts by faith, simple childlike faith that believes in the God Who revealed Himself through the ages and in particular, His Son, Jesus Christ. You will come alive in your spirit when you allow the beauty of His Spirit to move your emotions, not your mind. Ponder and meditate on the Words of His prayer, and upon Him Who died for you, and atoned for your sin. I am not Morman, but I can appreciate what they have done here when I am in touch with Him by His Spirit. Jesus said in John 4, we worship God in Spirit and Truth, and that is what enables us to look beyond doctrinal differences and appreciate the truth. It is beautiful, and they are, His Words. This is a beautiful rendition of the Lord's Prayer. It brought tears to my eyes and made me cry because I'm going through a conversion at this time, I'm coming back to the Catholic Church and I'm so grateful for it. Also that God made it possible for this man to sing so beautifully. We should all be grateful for our lives and the gifts that the Lord has given each of us.

THANK You for sending this to me...What an absolutely awesome rendition of OUR PRAYER... This was a stroke of genius that paired Bocelli with the "Angel Choir" of the Morman Tabernacle.
I'm looking at the ice and snow outside (which will probably keep me home from Church tomorrow)...and plan to play this several more times. Thanks again...and GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

To David in TN, et al who agree with him:

This music does stir the emotions, including mine, of course, but, all I am stating is that music can and should do MORE than just stir the emotions. It should stir the emotions, yes, but it must also stir the mind, AND the soul. This presentation stirs the emotions of my heart, yes, indeed, but it does not stir very much of my soul, nor does it stir my mind in a convincing manner very much at all, for the simple reason that this music does not have an eternal, timeless quality to it. It is music for the masses, music for the moment, beautiful, yes, but JUST that, and only that.

You must understand that the music of the TRUE masters will last forever and ever. This version of the Lord's Prayer, (which is only ONE version of the Lord's Prayer), may last for a little while, even a century or two, whereas the music of the great masters will go on, and on, because those composers put their entire beings into their compositions to allow them to have an objective appeal to all of mankind. Yes, Malotte may have put his all into this, but it is written in a musical style that has ALREADY BEEN DONE.

For example, how many people in the entire world know this piece of music by Malotte? On the other hand, if you mention Bach or Mozart to almost any civilized person in the entire world, they will know who you are talking about, because the greats are just that, the greats; the everlasting composers. This is absolutely NOT to demean Mr. Malotte whatsoever. It is beautiful, yes, but it does not impart a vision of eternity. The Malotte Lord's Prayer is a lot more flash than substance.

At any rate, I know that you will probably disagree with all of this, maybe even violently; but, please understand, that my opinion is not only from my mind, it is also an opinion from my heart, and even more importantly, an opinion from my soul.

As do many others, I too love many of the more serious time-tested works of the masterful musicmakers of the past, particularly the symphonies of Beethoven and the keyboard compositions of J.S. Bach.
Yet that does not prevent me to adore, admire, and appreciate the performances of the Tabernacle Choir and the Tabernacle organ (especially the artistry of Dick Elliott, Andrew Unsworth, and Kim Moody), along with, in this instance, Andrea Bocelli.
It's OK for Hosea to harbor his own feelings.
However, it seems not wise, helpful, or constructive for him to bring his negative opinions to this forum and to propagate them here.
On the contrary, his behavior seems to be unwise, unhelpful, and destructive.
What useful purpose did he seek to serve by expressing his contrary opinions here?
Turn anyone against Bocelli, the other artists, or the musical setting?
Or just spread discomfiture among the other participants?
Or maybe just show off in public?

Walter,

You accuse the Mormons of discriminating against women. Are you aware that women in the Utah territory had the right to vote from the time the territory was formed? Utah had to TAKE AWAY the right of women to vote in order to become a state of the U.S. because the U.S. was yet not allowing women to vote. As to black faces in the choir, look again, and check the soloist list. You are in for some pleasant surprises. Thank you for the praise of the choir's music. There is a reason they are so powerful in song, it is the truth of and conviction with which they sing.

Incredible talent(s). This is my morning prayer so I look forward to getting it on CD for that purpose. Mr. Bocelli's "gift" makes it incumbent upon us to redefine a handicap. He so obviously sees and feels on a deeper level than so many of us do. And he is not restricted by what or who he can physically see. This performance was as synchronized and moving as his duet w/one of the "Queens of Pop," Mary J. Blige -- on his Christmas CD. They sang: "Mary, Did You Know?"

Pam said...

Saints, as beautiful as you think he and they are, it is nothing compared to what is in store for us when we are with Christ in heaven; the angels are singing with us in the heavenlies and sometimes if you listen very close, you will hear them in the spirit.

PS: And, yes, he has a beautiful voice and I have his AVE MARIA album and his last Christmas Album with the O HOLY NITE in French; God Bless him.

OK, folks -

>> Yet that does not prevent me to adore, admire, and appreciate the performances of the Tabernacle Choir and the Tabernacle organ (especially the artistry of Dick Elliott, Andrew Unsworth, and Kim Moody), along with, in this instance, Andrea Bocelli. >>

I stated not ONE word against any of these people.

<< It's OK for Hosea to harbor his own feelings.

Negative opinion? Did you actually read my opinion. And, by objecting to an opinion about the MUSIC sung, and nothing else, you strike me as being very negative. And besides, I never said the music is bad, I simply stated that there is better music IN MY OPINION. That is NOT anything negative.

<< Turn anyone against Bocelli, the other artists, or the musical setting? >>

I am sorry, but are you kidding?? I neither said nor implied ANYTHING against Bocelli. On the other hand, there WAS another post here that stated that Bocelli was good, but was not as good as Pavarotti. As far as the musical setting, I am saying there is better music, no matter how good you may think how good the Malotte is. It IS good, but there is better!!!

<< Or just spread discomfiture among the other participants?>>

Spread discomfiture?? Again, are you and other post makers all so immature, that you are unable to endure the mildest "contrary" opinion about a piece of music, that while good, is absolutely NOT the greatest composition ever written.

>> Or maybe just show off in public?>>

What are you talking about. Showing off??
For whom?? Please, get a grip.

Let him be our Dad for just a little longer, let him love his wife, our Mother just a little longer, so we can show him how much he means to us. We haven't had enough time to make our family whole again. Life gets in the way no matter what our good intentions. May your mercy rein down on my Dad, and all who love him. In Jesus name, Amen. Ordinarily it's not good for Hosea or anyone else to use a forum of this sort as a soapbox on which to publicize a dislike or disapproval of the subject music.
Clearly, the overwhelming majority of the participants here appreciate and admire the music and the artists, and we praise God for it and them.
Hosea cannot and will not change any minds here.
His views to the contrary do not belong here, for they do not serve a useful purpose.
One might choose to ignore or disregard his impudent and disrespectful expressions.
However, there are times, such as this one, when it's appropriate for someone to call his hand and to ask him to cease and desist.
When Hosea dislikes anything here, let him quietly remove himself, and let him read, watch, or listen elsewhere.
That is, if Hosea dislikes what he finds here, let him quietly go somewhere else instead.

Obviously, his appearance with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing The Lord's Prayer brought all of those same heart-touching reactions once again. What a guy.... and what a wonderful family.

This was beautiful! Tiffany, it's been satans job to also cause Christians to sin and make you feel that way. Realize/accept the fact that the promise of Jesus "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me," is as He says. Your void will be filled with an inexpressable joy and peace. You have a grand chance for your heart to be filled with true joy if you go right to the source. Annie

This is a very beautiful piece of music. I don't understand why many comments brought Obama into the discussion as though Our President has anything at all to do with how A.Bocelli or the MTC sing? I also was quite tickled at 'Lynn's' justification to 'Walter' as to why there aren't more persons of color in the MTC. (and I quote) "As for the choir, they have very strict requirements, including being an active member of the Church with a temple recommend, a degree in music, tough auditions, including sight reading, and a strenuous schedule." I guess in her mind that precludes "other than caucasian"? Whatever, the MTC is what it is, just accept the beautiful offerings they give the music world. Also, I'm pretty sure Bocelli doesn't care what color anyone is! Just listen to the message, don't shoot the messengers!
